“Videographic Criticism in Cinema & Media Studies and Media Arts Pedagogy” integrates videographic criticism into curriculum in the Cinema & Media Studies BA and Media Arts BFA at York. Christian Keathley and Jason Mittell define the “videographic essay” as a new form of scholarly and pedagogical practice that “conducts analysis and conveys arguments in a multimedia form about multimedia objects of study” through digital technologies. Put simply, rather than use written language to write standard essays, students use images and sounds along with written and spoken language to prepare videographic essays, literalizing the etymology of the term: writing (graphy) with video. Students articulate their analysis and argumentation through the arrangement, sequencing, and editing of images (still and moving), sound (speech, music, effects), and language (text). The grant will allow us to explore the efficacy of videographic criticism as a pedagogical tool.
